Canary Beck on Ambient Sound in SL

Although it is apparently based on a NWN article that I do not have the patience to read today (NWN is so often annoying; see prior satire), this piece by Canary Beck is well worth a read (and not long):

and there is an optional pretty and instructive “Sights and Sounds of Basilique” video that you can watch / listen to.

I have a couple of “pretty nature sounds” objects that I tend to drop copies of onto parcels that I own, but I may be inspired this Canary Beck post to put a little more effort than that into it…  :)

The New Gallery again

Wow, I haven’t posted here since April? At least it was April of this year. :)

So the other night a friend and I wandered downslope from the Rise into Mooter, where Gee Blackadder has some nice stuff, and in the nice stuff we discovered this piece of art for sale (“Afrodita”, by Kyra) that I thought I would buy a copy of and put up in the Gallery, so I did; here it is up in the New Gallery:

I really ought to put a little TP to the gallery somewhere, or even list it in Art Galleries of Second Life or something, as it’s kind of as nice little place (I say modestly) with a slowly-evolving set of pieces by various people, mostly not me.

And then at the top you can sit on the viewing blocks and just bliss out staring into the ThingMaker (which is by me) and listening to the SomaFM music on the stream (assuming I haven’t changed it to something else).

Tiering Up

(A Tier In My Beer? Little Tierdrops? Tier-stained? I considered a bunch of tier / tear puns for the title, but none of them made quite the right kind of nonsense.)

Anyway! I decided to give myself a little present and tier up (again) to the quarter-sim (plus 512m2) level. I bought one little plot in the Rise adjacent to some of my land, that I’d had my eye on, and then found that there was no more land for sale in the sim. Natch!

There was significant abandoned land, so I went to the URL in the parcel descriptions, followed the instructions to open a ticket, and after a few days got a very nice reply from Dee Linden saying that she had put a set of abandoned Rise parcels for sale to me for the standard 1L/m2, that should just about max me out.

And they did! Here is the ownership map of Hughes Rise currently (green is me, red is Other, the couple of mysterious dots are some particles or something photobombing):

Tiered up again!

Note how nice and contiguous most of it is, and how I now have land on both sides of Wellington Road in the corner there. Fun!

(Note also that Up is East on that map, because for some reason that is always how I look at the Rise.)

I think I have like another 48m2 before my tier is full; maybe I will donate it to some worthy group (if that small amount wouldn’t be insulting and I can figure out how), or buy a tiny parcel in some totally random place just for grins…

I haven’t done anything with all the new land yet, nor do I have any specific plans, but sitting around looking at how many free prims I have and rubbing my hands together and cackling is nice. :)

Automatic walking (and the invisible stranger)

So very poetic friend Karima flatteringly chose my avatar following script as some context for a new poem of hers lauding scripters (she even used some of the code in the poem, and although this sounds like it couldn’t possibly work it certainly does, and you should go read it).

This reminded me of a related script that I have been too lazy to work on forever and ever, and I now have a rough draft. It may stay a rough draft for some time :) since LSL makes it hard to do in a really polished way, but in any meantime here it is. When you’re using it, once you start walking you keep walking, more or less forward unless you use the side-arrow keys to turn, until you tap backward or etc to stop. (Works best on or over flat ground; see the page for details!)

If I ever like it enough I’ll put it into the Library.

Here is a picture of me walking with the automatic walker. Note that this is a hard sort of picture to get in general, because you have to walk and cam around to looking at yourself from the front at the same time, but the walker makes it relatively simple!

(Well, okay, and without any special scripts you can also cheat by just playing a walking anim and not actually walking. :) But this would let you make a video of yourself walking! A bit, anyway…)

In other news, I noticed that for a long time (like, weeks) there had been a green dot over in an adjacent parcel on the Rise, and whenever I went over to look it was the same AV name in the title floating there, but with no visible person, and they never answered chat or IMs.

Feeling whimsical the other day, I’d nudged the invisible person (who turned out to be nudgeable) over into my land, and built a little protective envelope of colorful devices around them. I figured I’d keep them around as a decoration until my conscience got the better of me, and then send them home (since they were on my land, and I could now do Teleport Agent Home).

But then not long after that I logged into the Rise, and there they were again, standing invisible and unresponsive at the same place in the empty field next door. (And yeah I’ve checked high and low and Highlight Transparent; I suppose they are probably wearing a full-transparent body alpha, or something subtler.)

Most puzzling! What process moved them back there again, to stand again invisible and unresponsive?

But that’s why we love the mainland. :)

Update: the llSetForce() version of this seems to work just awesomely! I am now playing with a version where you stop by pressing Back, and each time you press Forward it speeds you up a bit. Enormous fun so far!
